I knew that she did by the way she looked at me when she and Dad got back from their trip Sunday afternoon. Amelia and I were sharing the recliner in the living room, my arms were around her and her head was on my shoulder – we were simply watching TV, but even I could tell that our body language around each other had subtly changed.
We were closer – her actions easy and natural, mine gentle and protective. She was content to curl up beside me, letting me run my fingers through her soft blonde hair. I'd forgotten about the world and got quite the shock when the front door opened and my parents came inside.

People liked to believe they knew what pain was. The most boring, normal people thought of it as a broken heart, or the time when they got their first serious childhood injury. They were laughed at by the rougher folk, those who had seen real fighting. “Rougher” men saw pain as something greater. They would imagine it as that time they were beaten senseless, or found themselves stabbed, and brushed, for the first time, with death. They would tell you that there is nothing that could be more painful than dying slowly and thinking you will never see all the people you know again.
Natalya laughed at them. She delighted in proving them wrong.
